Do I need snow chains for Porters Pass and Arthur's Pass?
In snow and ice, often yes. NZTA runs State Highway 73 as chains essential in those conditions, and chains are most often needed at Porters Pass, Craigieburn Cutting and the Otira Viaduct. Carry chains that fit your tyres, practise fitting them before you go, and check NZTA road conditions on the day.
When are chains required on SH73?
When there's snow or ice at altitude, NZTA signals the need for chains at Springfield and Otira, on either side of the passes. The road stays open to vehicles fitted with chains at the trouble spots, but sections can close completely in heavy snow, and some are closed to towing vehicles. That happened between Springfield and Castle Hill on 27 September 2026.
What about Lewis Pass and the other alpine roads?
NZTA asks anyone travelling over the South Island's alpine passes, including Arthur's, Porters, Lewis and Lindis, to carry chains and know how to fit them. Lewis Pass (SH7) is the usual alternative when SH73 is affected, but it can close in heavy snow too.
Does a 4WD need chains?
NZTA's advice to carry chains applies to every driver crossing the passes in winter. Four-wheel drive helps you get moving on snow, but it doesn't help you stop or steer on ice.
How do I choose the right chains?
Chains are sized to your tyres, so check the size printed on the sidewall before you buy. Your vehicle handbook may also say whether there's enough clearance for chains, and which wheels to fit them to. Practise at home: fitting chains for the first time on a cold, dark roadside is hard.
Where can I check conditions?
Use the NZTA journey planner at journeys.nzta.govt.nz or call 0800 44 44 49 before you set off.
Not sure what you need?
Call in for a free tyre safety check at 18 Durham Street South, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. We'll tell you straight if it needs work.
Common questions
Can I tow a caravan over Porters Pass in snow?
Often not. In heavy snow NZTA closes sections of SH73, including Springfield to Castle Hill, to towing vehicles. Check conditions before you leave.
Where are chain requirements signalled?
NZTA signals when chains are needed at Springfield and Otira, on either side of the passes.
Is there another route when Arthur's Pass is closed?
Lewis Pass (SH7) is NZTA's suggested alternative, though it can also close in heavy snow. NZTA tries to keep at least one pass open.
