Can my tyre puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?
Usually yes, if the hole is in the central tread area and the tyre wasn't driven on while flat. Punctures in the shoulder or sidewall can't be safely repaired, and a tyre that's been run flat may have hidden internal damage. The only way to know for sure is to remove the tyre and inspect it from the inside.
Where on the tyre is the puncture?
Location decides most repairs. Tyre makers such as Michelin say a puncture in the tread area is repairable in most cases, a puncture in the shoulder is not, and sidewall damage is generally not repairable because the sidewall flexes constantly and a repair would weaken it.
- Tread (the flat centre that touches the road): usually repairable.
- Shoulder (where the tread meets the sidewall): replace the tyre.
- Sidewall: replace the tyre.
Why does the tyre need to come off the rim?
Driving on a soft or flat tyre can crush and overheat its inner lining, even over a short distance. That damage is often invisible from the outside. Taking the tyre off lets a technician check the inside before deciding whether a repair is safe.
What does a proper repair look like?
The accepted standard is a combined plug and patch fitted from the inside, which seals both the hole and the inner liner. Roadside plug kits and tyre sealant are emergency measures to get you to a workshop, not permanent fixes.
What should I do straight after a puncture?
- Slow down and pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can.
- Fit the spare, or use a sealant or plug kit only to reach a workshop.
- Avoid driving on the flat tyre. It can turn a repairable puncture into a replacement.
- Leave the nail or screw in place and bring the tyre in for a check.

Common questions
Can a sidewall puncture be repaired?
Generally no. The sidewall flexes with every turn of the wheel, so a repair there can fail. Michelin advises that sidewall damage is generally not repairable and shoulder damage never is.
Is tyre sealant a permanent fix?
No. Sealant and plug kits are emergency measures to get you to a workshop. Have the tyre removed and inspected, because sealant can hide damage inside the tyre.
Will a repaired tyre pass a WoF?
A WoF inspector checks tyre condition, including at least 1.5 mm of tread and no cracks, bulges or exposed cords. A properly repaired tyre in good condition is checked the same way as any other.
